The Great Court was recorded by Prosoxi Skylos at the British Museum in London, March 2014.

At the center of the British Museum sits the largest covered public square in Europe, the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court. Designed by Foster and Partners, the massive structure is a two-acre space enclosed by a spectacular glass roof with the world-famous Reading Room in the middle. Each week, some 100,000 people pass through this chamber, gliding below the glass dome, which expands and contracts in response to temperature and light entering the space.

Winding down stairs, through open passageways, over forks and knives and the drum of coffee, we daydream, lost in the footsteps and conversations of the museum-goers, pre-occupied with itineraries and inner thoughts. The Great Court calmly immortalizes the timeless everyday hum of human harmony, memory, and drama in the modern age; combining language, laughter, leisure and labor for a voyeuristic portraiture of a fertile cultural crossroads.

The Great Court was originally released digitally by Jipangu on April 8, 2021. Modern Concern is honored to offer it now in physical form as the second entry in its Thick Descriptions series, which is dedicated to multi-media placestudies and works of acoustic ecology which utilize unmanipulated, candid field recording techniques.

Prosoxi Skylos is the field recording project of Jaroslav Tarnovski, one of the founding members of the experimental free folk quartet Gurun Gurun. He also plays solo and in the bands Wabi Experience, Luna & Tarnovski, and IQ+1. He often collaborates with Japanese musicians including Dustin Wong, Takako Minekawa, aus, and Asuna. He has collaborated with the singer Haco on two albums and toured with her in Japan and Europe. He also published a split with the Italian A/V project Mai Mai Mai and produced a retrospective 8-CD set by the Czech folk legend Oldřich Janota. His kaleidoscopic work has been released on labels such as Home Normal, Mikroton Recordings, Genot Centre, and mappa.
