about

“Mada” (“still”) was composed by legendary Japanese multi-disciplinary artist Taku Sugimoto in 2014. It was premiered in recorded form in 2016 with a limited run of CD-Rs by seminal Vancouver, BC imprint caduc. Today, Modern Concern is honored to offer a refreshing iteration of Sugimoto’s monolithic masterpiece, with a new intimate performance led by an indomitable trio of Chilean musicians (Cristián Alvear, Santiago Blanco, and Nicolás Carrasco).

In this form, the pastoral essence of 2016’s interpretation is largely disseminated through the lens of Blanco and Carrasco’s investigative yet decidedly playful approach to synthesis. A complete reimagining of Sugimoto’s sonic language emerges; a futuristic landscape which recalls some of the sunny experimentalism of early electronic pioneers and the comforting hyperactivity of glitch and algorithmic computer music.

What remains from the caduc. performance however, is the visionary guitar work of Cristián Alvear, who also edited and mastered the recording presented here. Moments of stark, steely intention collide with total indeterminacy, like trees rising out from the earth. Landmarks, encouraging moments in listening you can distinctly recall.

A sense of recollection is important here, as the dark corners of Mada’s labyrinthian expanses can sometimes feel sinister. Mada does not adhere to the same sonic lightness that much of Sugimoto’s solo work is afforded. Here, there are no soft clouds, formless under blue skies. No wedding ceremonies. Instead, we are led by flashlight to the fringes of town. From here we can better discern the way our actions coalesce.
