"If I gave a description of this album, I would want it to be immediately dismissed with a scoff. The album is placid. That is to say it fits so snugly into my mind that I see no difference between its sounds and those that come filtering into my ears every day.

It is an album for those who feel dissatisfied with the ideas they are pelted with from all quarters, for those who lean further still into the lividity of their deranged passions (for they cannot be helped except by chance), and for those who simply do not care a fig."

Expansion Towards Pristine Flatness is a new kaleidoscopic full-length work from Jiang Xia-Meng, one of the many aliases of the prolific Philadelphia-based sound artist and “shit-fi” commandeer known to some only as Schumacher.

Seemingly subjectless, its sonic material crosses cultural, aesthetic, and physical boundaries with an intoxicating tenacity. From a bird’s eye view, the record is maddening in scope. A conglomerate of aging field recordings and fried found tape; diaries stripped of their identities and a pervading sense of irony stripped of all context. Globetrotting. Deliberate in its diffuseness, and effectively daunting.

But up close, Schumacher’s devout curation of small sounds and domestic interstices encourages a sense of constant displacement which feels more akin to actual reality than music. Up close, the irony reveals itself an uncanny intimacy. Up close, the distance between its tangential focuses is not an obligation, but instead a harmless coincidence. Up close, you can finally see the flatness.

Expansion Towards Pristine Flatness was recorded, composed, and mixed by Schumacher in the second half of 2021 using a blend of domestic, online, and synthetic field recordings effected by way of cellphone, microphone, Audacity, Ableton, various websites, RNG, and their general environs. Their work has appeared on labels such as New Motion, 7FORM, and Holed Up Records. They also manage Teorema di Gasparo.
