Sure Is A Good Hamburger is a haunting new composition from Canadian master Lance Austin Olsen. For 25 years, Olsen has fearlessly cultivated a singularly painterly approach to modern classical and improvised music, conflating visual and graphic approaches to composition with an eclectic and uncompromising repertoire of sound. His work has appeared on labels such as Infrequency Editions, which focuses on his collaborations with sound artist Jamie Drouin, caduc., Elsewhere, and Another Timbre.

Hamburger is a startling new addition to Olsen’s over half-century of artistry. Rather than presenting the listener with the pleasure of the meal, Sure Is… instead seems to concern itself with the journey of digestion. Dark, depressive stretches of post-industrial soundscapes slowly tunnel through the bowels, compromised in a maze of idle conversations, raw acoustics, and symphonic bursts of microsound. A lonely guitar periodically echoes through vast expanses of reductionist orchestration and gestating silence. Monochrome, billowing, in perplexing variations of consequence; somber images of dead airwaves, waiting rooms, and the eerie early hours before the break of morning.

What once felt grounded in reality soon begins to feel increasingly imagined. Despite any familiarity with Olsen’s performance or practice, Hamburger reduces our notions of contemporary sound design, and in the process, swallows you whole. What state you come out on the other side remains to be seen.
